Your Baby This Week

About the size of a coconut

Length: ~39cm, 1.2 kg

Quick Answer

At 29 weeks, your baby is about 39cm long and weighs approximately 1.2 kg — the size of a coconut. Space inside the womb is getting tight, so you’ll feel kicks and rolls more intensely. Baby’s bones are actively storing calcium, iron, and phosphorus — which means your body needs extra of these minerals. Keep counting kicks daily. Aapka baby ab bahut active hai — aur aapko har movement feel hoga.

Baby Development at Week 29

Your baby is running out of room and getting stronger:

  • Space is getting tight — baby is curled up, and movements feel more like strong rolls and jabs rather than flutters
  • Bones are storing calcium, iron, and phosphorus — baby is building bone density. This is why your calcium and iron needs are highest in the third trimester
  • Muscles are getting stronger — those kicks pack more punch now
  • Brain is developing rapidly — forming billions of neurons and connections. Brain growth is one of the main reasons the last weeks of pregnancy matter so much
  • Fat continues to accumulate — baby is getting chubbier. This white fat helps with temperature regulation after birth
  • Adrenal glands are producing steroid-like hormones — these help trigger milk production in your body
  • Baby can taste, hear, see light, and feel touch — all senses are functional now

Your Body at Week 29

Third trimester symptoms are in full swing. You’re carrying significantly more weight and your body is feeling it.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
Severe heartburnUterus pushing stomach, relaxed sphincter letting acid upSleep propped up, small meals, avoid trigger foods, doctor-approved antacid
Back painSignificant now. Extra weight + loosened joints + shifted postureWarm compress, prenatal yoga, maternity belt, avoid standing long
Swelling (edema)Feet, ankles, hands. May need bigger footwearElevate feet multiple times per day, compression socks, stay hydrated
BreathlessnessLess lung space as uterus expands. More pronounced with exertionSlow down, good posture (standing tall opens up chest), sleep propped up
Frequent urinationBaby’s head pressing on bladder, especially if head-downNormal. Don’t hold it — increases UTI risk
Varicose veinsIncreased blood volume + uterus pressing on pelvic veinsCompression stockings, elevate legs, avoid standing long. Usually resolve postpartum

Movement Patterns

As space gets tighter, the type of movement changes. You may feel fewer big kicks and more rolls, stretches, and pushes. This is normal as long as you still count 10 movements in 2 hours. The pattern of activity matters more than the type — if baby’s schedule changes suddenly, pay attention.

Tests & Screenings Due

Routine Third Trimester Visits (Every 2 Weeks)

  • Blood pressure — preeclampsia risk is highest in the third trimester
  • Urine for protein (preeclampsia) and sugar (GDM monitoring)
  • Fundal height — should roughly match weeks of pregnancy in cm
  • Fetal heart rate
  • Weight check

Growth Scan

Your doctor may schedule a growth scan (ultrasound) to check:

  • Baby’s estimated weight and growth trajectory
  • Amniotic fluid levels (too much or too little can be a concern)
  • Placenta position
  • Baby’s presentation (head-down, breech, transverse)

If You Have GDM

  • Blood sugar monitoring (fasting and post-meal targets)
  • More frequent growth scans — GDM babies can grow larger than average
  • Discussion about delivery timing (often induced at 38-39 weeks if on insulin)

Nutrition This Week

Baby is storing minerals aggressively. Your body is the only source.

What to Prioritize

  • Calcium: 1000 mg/day — baby is pulling calcium from your bones if you don’t get enough. Doodh, dahi, paneer, ragi, til, green leafy vegetables
  • Iron: 60 mg elemental iron daily (ICMR recommendation) — baby is storing iron for the first 6 months of life (breast milk is low in iron). Continue supplements with vitamin C
  • Protein: 78g/day — baby is gaining weight fast. Dal, paneer, eggs, chicken, fish, chana
  • DHA — brain development continues at rapid pace. Walnuts, flaxseeds, fish
  • Fiber and fluids — constipation can be brutal in the third trimester. Whole grains, fruits, sabzi, isabgol, 2.5-3 litres water
  • Vitamin D — helps calcium absorption. Morning sunlight, eggs, fortified foods

What to Avoid

  • Excess sodium — contributes to swelling and blood pressure
  • Large meals — eat small and frequent to manage heartburn and breathlessness
  • Lying flat after eating
  • Processed/packaged foods — high in sodium and low in nutrition
  • Skipping iron supplements — anemia in the third trimester is dangerous for delivery

When to Call Your Doctor

These are red flags in the third trimester:

  • Fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours — after trying twice with a cold drink or snack in between
  • Vaginal bleeding — any amount
  • Fluid leaking or gushing — PPROM. Go to hospital immediately
  • Regular contractions before 37 weeks — timing them: if every 5-10 minutes for an hour and not stopping with rest
  • Severe headache that won’t go away, visual disturbances, sudden face/hand swelling — preeclampsia
  • Severe upper right abdominal pain — could be HELLP syndrome
  • Sudden significant weight gain (1+ kg in a week) — could indicate fluid retention/preeclampsia
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 30: Body fat accumulating rapidly, including brown fat for temperature regulation. Brain maturing rapidly — folds deepening
  • Weeks 30-34: More growth scans, finalize delivery hospital, prepare for maternity leave
  • Week 32: Baby is typically head-down by now. If breech, doctor may discuss options

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Baby ki kicks kam ho gayi hain — kya yeh normal hai?

29 weeks ke baad space tight hota hai, toh kicks ki type badal jaati hai — bade kicks ki jagah rolls aur stretches zyada feel honge. Yeh normal hai. LEKIN agar total movement kam ho jaaye (2 ghante mein 10 se kam) toh yeh normal nahi hai. Turant doctor ko call karein. Movement ki type badalna normal hai — movement ka ghatna normal nahi hai.

Hospital bag mein kya pack karoon?

Abhi se start karein: ID aur insurance papers, prenatal records, comfortable nightgowns (2-3), nursing bra, maternity pads, toiletries, baby ke kapde (4-5 sets), baby blanket, diapers (newborn size), baby caps and socks. Ek list bana lein aur dheere dheere add karein. 36 weeks tak bag ready hona chahiye.

Mujhe bahut breathlessness ho rahi hai — kya yeh dangerous hai?

Third trimester mein breathlessness common hai kyunki uterus diaphragm ko push kar raha hai aur oxygen demand badh gayi hai. Seedhe baithein, aaram se chalein, aur sone ke waqt sar upar rakhein. Yeh normal hai. LEKIN agar achanak bahut severe ho, chest pain ho, lips/nakhun neele padein, ya saans bahut fast ho toh emergency hai — turant hospital jaayein.

Week 29 Checklist

  • Continue daily kick counting — 10 movements in 2 hours
  • Take iron and calcium supplements religiously — baby is storing minerals now
  • Keep up prenatal visits every 2 weeks
  • Stay hydrated — 2.5-3 litres per day minimum
  • Pack your hospital bag — at least start with the essentials
  • Practice breathing exercises — helps with breathlessness now and labor later
  • Discuss maternity leave timing with your workplace if applicable
