Your Baby This Week

About the size of a olive

Length: ~3cm, ~5g

Quick Answer

At 10 weeks, your baby is about the size of an olive (~3cm, ~5g). This week is a big one for limb development — arms, hands, and fingers are fully formed, fingernails are beginning to grow, and external genitals are starting to form (though too early to tell on ultrasound). Nausea is still common but should begin easing over the next few weeks.

Baby Development at Week 10

Your baby has graduated from the embryonic period and is now fully in the fetal stage. Growth is accelerating:

  • Arms, hands, and fingers are fully formed — no more webbing between fingers
  • Fingernails are beginning to grow — tiny but present
  • External genitals are forming — though it’s too early to determine sex on ultrasound (that comes around weeks 18-20)
  • Bones are starting to harden — cartilage is beginning to calcify into bone
  • The brain is growing rapidly — growing rapidly and will eventually produce about 250,000 new neurons per minute during peak neurogenesis (weeks 15-20)
  • Vital organs are all in place — now they’ll spend the rest of pregnancy maturing
  • Baby can swallow — amniotic fluid is being swallowed and processed by the kidneys

At ~5 grams, your baby weighs about as much as a small coin. But the foundation is complete — from here, it’s all about growth and refinement.

Your Body at Week 10

The hormonal storm is still raging, but for many women, the worst of the nausea is starting to plateau. Your uterus is now about the size of a large orange.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
NauseaStill present for most, but may start plateauing. Peak was weeks 8-10Keep doing what’s been working — small meals, ginger, bland foods
Visible veinsBlood volume is increasing by 50% over pregnancy. Veins on breasts, abdomen, and legs may become more visibleNormal and temporary. Compression socks help with leg veins
Round ligament stretchingSharp or pulling sensation in the lower abdomen/groin as your uterus growsChange positions slowly. A warm (not hot) compress helps
ConstipationProgesterone slows your entire digestive tractFibre-rich foods — isabgol, papaya (ripe is fine), whole grains. Stay hydrated
HeadachesHormonal changes + increased blood volume + possible dehydrationStay hydrated. Rest. Paracetamol is safe if needed (ask your doctor)
Increased vaginal dischargeLeukorrhea — thin, white, mild-smelling discharge is normalWear cotton underwear. Don’t douche. See doctor if it’s green, yellow, or itchy

Emotional Shifts

By week 10, the reality of pregnancy is sinking in. It’s normal to feel excited, anxious, overwhelmed, or all three at the same time. Agar aapko lagta hai ki emotions bahut zyada ho rahe hain, toh kisi se baat karna zaroori hai — partner, friend, ya doctor.

Tests & Screenings Due

NIPT / cfDNA Test (Optional, Available from 10+ Weeks)

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing is a blood test from the mother’s arm that screens for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13). It’s more accurate than the Double Marker test.

  • Accuracy: >99% detection rate for Down syndrome
  • Cost in India: Rs 15,000-25,000 in metro cities
  • Who should consider it: Women over 35, those with family history of chromosomal conditions, or anyone who wants higher accuracy than the standard Double Marker
  • Important: NIPT is a screening test, not diagnostic. A positive result needs confirmation with amniocentesis or CVS

If you’re opting for the standard screening route instead, the NT scan + Double Marker test window opens next week (11 weeks).

Routine Follow-up

  • Review blood test results from your booking visit
  • If hemoglobin is low (<11 g/dL), your doctor will start iron supplementation
  • If TSH is abnormal, thyroid medication may be needed — this is very common and very treatable

Nutrition This Week

No extra calories needed in the first trimester. If nausea is finally easing up a bit, this is a good time to slowly reintroduce nutritious foods.

What to Prioritize

  • Folic acid: 400 mcg/day — continue through the first trimester
  • Calcium: 1000 mg/day (ICMR) — ragi dosa, curd, paneer, til (sesame) laddoo
  • Iron — jaggery with peanuts (gudh-mungfali), green leafy vegetables, pomegranate juice
  • Protein — eggs, dal, sprouts, chicken, fish (avoid high-mercury fish like shark/swordfish)
  • Omega-3 — walnuts (akhrot), flaxseeds (alsi), and fatty fish like salmon if available

Easy Indian Meals When Nausea Is Still Around

  • Curd rice (thayir sadam) — gentle on the stomach
  • Ragi porridge with jaggery — iron + calcium in one bowl
  • Moong dal khichdi — easy to digest, good protein
  • Banana with a handful of almonds — quick energy + good fats

When to Call Your Doctor

These symptoms need immediate medical attention at any point in the first trimester:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding — soaking more than 1 pad per hour
  • Severe one-sided abdominal pain — could indicate ectopic pregnancy
  • Severe vomiting — can’t keep fluids down for 12+ hours
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C) with chills
  • Painful urination with fever — could be ascending UTI
  • Dizziness or fainting with bleeding

Light spotting is common and often harmless, but always tell your doctor.

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 11: Baby can open and close fists. NT scan window opens
  • Week 12: All major systems are functional. Miscarriage risk drops significantly — many families announce now
  • Week 13: Last week of the first trimester. Transition to the second trimester

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Kya NIPT test zaroori hai?

Zaroori nahi hai — ye optional screening hai. Standard route hai NT scan + Double Marker test (week 11-13 mein hota hai). NIPT zyada accurate hai lekin mehnga hai (Rs 15,000-25,000). Agar aapki age 35+ hai ya family mein chromosomal conditions ka history hai, toh doctor se discuss karein. Dono mein se koi bhi choose kar sakti hain.

Week 10 mein pet dikhna chahiye kya?

Nahi, week 10 mein zyada tar women ko pet nahi dikhta — especially pehli pregnancy mein. Bloating ho sakti hai jisse pet bada lagta hai, lekin actual baby bump usually week 14-16 ke baad dikhna shuru hota hai. Har body alag hoti hai, toh koi fixed timeline nahi hai.

Week 10 Checklist

  • Continue folic acid 400 mcg/day and calcium 1000 mg/day (ICMR)
  • Book your NT scan for weeks 11-13+6 if not already scheduled
  • Discuss NIPT/cfDNA test with your doctor if you want early genetic screening (available from this week)
  • Follow up on booking visit blood reports — especially hemoglobin and TSH
  • Wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing — your waist is expanding
  • Start planning how and when you want to share the news (many wait until after week 12)
