1st Trimester

Week 3 of Pregnancy

Fertilization has occurred! A single-celled zygote — carrying your baby's complete DNA — is now dividing rapidly and traveling toward your uterus for implantation.

Quick Answer

This is the week conception actually happens. Sperm meets egg in the fallopian tube, and a single-celled zygote forms — carrying the complete DNA blueprint for your baby. Over the next few days, this cell divides rapidly and travels to your uterus. You won’t feel a thing yet, and no pregnancy test will show positive. Lekin andar bahut kuch ho raha hai.

Baby Development at Week 3

Fertilization is one of the most extraordinary events in human biology:

  • Sperm penetrates the egg — out of millions, only one succeeds. The moment it does, the egg’s surface changes to block all others
  • The zygote forms — a single cell containing 46 chromosomes (23 from you, 23 from the father). Your baby’s sex, eye color, hair color — all decided in this instant
  • Rapid cell division begins — the zygote divides into 2 cells, then 4, then 8, forming a ball called a morula
  • The morula travels — it moves through the fallopian tube toward the uterus over 3-4 days
  • By day 5-6, it becomes a blastocyst — a hollow ball of about 100 cells with an inner cell mass (which becomes the baby) and an outer layer (which becomes the placenta)

All of this is happening at a microscopic scale. The entire structure is smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.

Your Body at Week 3

Honestly? You feel nothing different. Conception has just occurred, but your body hasn’t started producing pregnancy hormones yet.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
No symptomsConception just occurred — hCG hasn’t started yetThis is completely normal
Post-ovulation progesterone effectsProgesterone rises after ovulation regardless of pregnancyMild bloating, breast sensitivity — same as any month
Two-week wait anxietyIf you’re TTC, this is the hardest part — waiting without knowingDistract yourself. Testing too early gives false negatives

Can You Feel Conception?

No. Despite what some forums claim, there is no physical sensation at the moment of fertilization. Some women report “feeling different” in the TWW (two-week wait), but this is likely progesterone — which rises after ovulation whether or not you’re pregnant.

The earliest possible sign is implantation spotting around days 6-10 after conception — and even that doesn’t happen for most women.

Nutrition This Week

Your diet now directly affects the developing embryo. The cells dividing right now are building the foundation of every organ.

What to Prioritize

  • Folic acid: 400 mcg/day — absolutely critical. The neural tube (brain + spinal cord) starts forming within days
  • Protein — paneer bhurji, moong dal, curd rice, egg bhurji, rajma chawal
  • Iron — ragi dosa, palak dal, beetroot halwa, pomegranate juice
  • Calcium — dahi, paneer, ragi, milk, sesame seeds (til)
  • Stay hydrated — 2-3 litres/day

What to Avoid

  • Alcohol — embryonic cells are extremely vulnerable. Zero tolerance
  • Raw or undercooked meat and eggs
  • Unpasteurized dairy
  • Raw papaya
  • Any new medication without doctor’s approval — many common drugs are teratogenic
  • X-rays and CT scans unless medically essential

When to Call Your Doctor

There’s no clinical reason to call this week specifically, but:

  • If you’re TTC and on fertility medications — your clinic will schedule blood work around now
  • If you have a history of ectopic pregnancy — early monitoring may be planned
  • If you’re on any chronic medication — confirm it’s pregnancy-safe NOW, not after you test positive
  • If you have uncontrolled thyroid or diabetes — these affect early embryo development

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 4: Implantation occurs. Light spotting possible. hCG starts rising — home pregnancy test may turn positive by the end of the week
  • Week 5: First missed period. Neural tube begins forming. Heart tube starts developing
  • Week 6: Heartbeat may be detectable on ultrasound. Nausea might begin

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Kya week 3 mein pregnancy test karna chahiye?

Nahi, abhi bahut jaldi hai. hCG hormone tab banta hai jab embryo uterus mein implant hota hai — jo week 4 mein hota hai. Week 3 mein test karenge toh negative aayega, chahe pregnant hon. Period miss hone ke din tak wait karein — tab test reliable hoga.

Mujhe kaise pata chalega ki fertilization hua hai ya nahi?

Week 3 mein pata lagane ka koi tarika nahi hai. Koi symptom nahi hota, koi test kaam nahi karta. Yeh sabse mushkil part hai — wait karna padta hai. Agar regular cycle hai aur ovulation ke aas-paas intercourse hua hai, toh chances ache hain. Bas folic acid lete rahein aur wait karein.

Kya stress se conception affect hota hai?

Haan, extreme stress cortisol badhata hai jo ovulation aur implantation dono ko affect kar sakta hai. Lekin normal daily stress se koi problem nahi hoti. Walk karein, achhi neend lein, aur overthink mat karein — yeh sabse practical advice hai.

Week 3 Checklist

  • Continue folic acid 400 mcg/day — neural tube formation starts soon
  • Avoid alcohol completely — the embryo is extremely sensitive to toxins now
  • Maintain regular meals — dal, roti, sabzi, curd — keep nutrition consistent
  • Don't take any new medications without checking with your doctor
  • Avoid X-rays and unnecessary radiation exposure
  • Stay calm — there's nothing to 'feel' yet, and that's perfectly normal
  • Keep taking iron-rich foods — ragi, palak, beetroot, jaggery
