Week 32 of Pregnancy

Your baby weighs about 1.7 kg and skin is no longer translucent. Most organs are ready except lungs and brain. Time for your growth scan.

Your Baby This Week

About the size of a coconut

Length: ~43cm, 1.7 kg

Quick Answer

At 32 weeks, your baby is about the size of a coconut (~43cm, 1.7 kg). A major milestone — your baby’s skin is no longer translucent, and most organs are functioning except the lungs and brain which need more time. This is the window for your growth scan. You’re 8 months pregnant now, and the finish line is in sight.

Baby Development at Week 32

Your baby is looking more and more like a newborn:

  • Skin is no longer translucent — fat deposits under the skin give it an opaque, pinkish appearance
  • Most organs are functional — digestive system, kidneys, and immune system are working. Lungs and brain are still maturing
  • Toenails and fingernails are visible — growing towards the tips
  • Baby is practicing breathing — inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid to strengthen lung muscles
  • Hair is growing — some babies have a full head of hair by now, others are bald (both normal)
  • Baby swallows amniotic fluid — kidneys process it and produce urine. This cycle maintains amniotic fluid levels

If born at 32 weeks, your baby would have a very good survival rate (95%+) with NICU support, though a few more weeks inside makes a big difference for lung maturity.

Your Body at Week 32

Your uterus is now about 12 cm above your belly button. You’ve probably gained 10-13 kg by now.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
Braxton HicksMore frequent now. Uterus tightening and releasingDrink water. Change position. Time them to make sure they’re irregular
Leaking colostrumBreasts may start leaking yellowish pre-milkBreast pads. Don’t express or stimulate — just let it happen
Varicose veinsIncreased blood volume + pressure from uterus on veinsCompression stockings. Elevate legs. Don’t cross legs
HemorrhoidsPressure on rectal veins + constipationFiber. Water. Sitz bath. OTC creams (ask doctor)
Rib painBaby’s feet pushing against your ribsChange position. Gentle stretching. Ice pack on the area
Shortness of breathUterus at its highest point, compressing lungsImproves after baby drops (lightening). Sit/sleep upright
Leg crampsEspecially at night. Could be calcium or magnesium relatedFlex foot upward. Magnesium-rich foods. Stay hydrated

Weight Gain Check

By 32 weeks, total weight gain of 10-13 kg is typical. You should be gaining about 0.5 kg per week. Sudden rapid weight gain (1+ kg in a week) could indicate fluid retention — mention it to your doctor.

Tests & Screenings Due

Growth Scan (32-34 Weeks)

This is one of the most important third-trimester ultrasounds. It checks:

  • Estimated fetal weight — is baby growing appropriately?
  • Amniotic fluid index (AFI) — too much (polyhydramnios) or too little (oligohydramnios) needs monitoring
  • Placenta position — if placenta was low (placenta previa) in earlier scans, this confirms if it has moved up
  • Baby’s position — head-down (cephalic), breech, or transverse
  • Umbilical artery Doppler — blood flow to baby

NST (Non-Stress Test)

If you’re high-risk (gestational diabetes, hypertension, IUGR, reduced fetal movements), your doctor may start NST monitoring from this week. The test monitors baby’s heart rate in response to movements — a reactive (normal) NST shows heart rate accelerations with movement.

Biophysical Profile

Combines NST with ultrasound to assess baby’s breathing movements, body movements, muscle tone, and amniotic fluid. Score of 8/10 or above is reassuring.

Routine Checks

  • Blood pressure
  • Urine for protein and sugar
  • Fundal height
  • Baby’s heartbeat

Nutrition This Week

What to Prioritize

  • Iron — your body’s iron demand peaks now. 60 mg elemental iron daily (ICMR recommendation). Take iron tablets with vitamin C (nimbu paani) for better absorption, not with tea or milk
  • Calcium — 1000 mg/day. Important for baby’s bone development (bones are hardening now)
  • DHA — for brain development. Fish oil, walnuts, flaxseeds
  • Vitamin D — helps calcium absorption. 15 minutes of morning sun. Supplement if deficient
  • Protein — dal, eggs, chicken, fish, soy, paneer. 78g/day target

Managing Heartburn

Heartburn gets worse from here. Tips:

  • Eat 5-6 small meals instead of 3 large ones
  • Don’t lie down for 2 hours after eating
  • Avoid spicy, fried, and citrus foods at night
  • Sleep with upper body slightly elevated
  • Antacids — ask your doctor which one is safe

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Contractions — 4 or more in an hour before 37 weeks (preterm labor risk)
  • Sudden severe headache with visual disturbances — preeclampsia warning
  • BP ≥ 140/90 — preeclampsia screening. Warning signs: severe headache, visual disturbances, sudden swelling of face/hands
  • Decreased fetal movement — fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours
  • Vaginal bleeding — any amount
  • Watery discharge — could be amniotic fluid leak (sweet smell, clear, continuous trickle)
  • Severe itching especially on palms and soles — could be obstetric cholestasis
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 33: Bones hardening (skull bones stay soft for the birth canal passage)
  • Week 34: Vernix thickens. Lungs maturing. Good survival chances if born now
  • Weeks 35-37: GBS screening. Hospital bag packing time. Visits become weekly at 36 weeks

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Growth scan mein baby chhota aa raha hai — tension leni chahiye?

Estimated weight ultrasound pe ±15% vary kar sakta hai. Agar baby 10th percentile se neeche hai toh doctor IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction) ke liye monitor karenge — Doppler studies, frequent NST. Agar Doppler normal hai toh usually baby theek hai, bas close monitoring chahiye.

Kya 32 weeks mein baby ulta hai toh C-section pakka hai?

Nahi. 32 weeks mein bahut se babies breech hote hain. 50-60% breech babies 36-37 weeks tak apne aap head-down ho jaate hain. Agar 36 weeks tak nahi palte toh doctor se baat karein ECV ke baare mein. C-section tab decide hota hai jab baby 37+ weeks tak breech rahe.

Mujhe raat ko bahut cramps aate hain — kya ye normal hai?

Leg cramps third trimester mein bahut common hain, khaas kar raat ko. Calcium aur magnesium ki kami ho sakti hai. Sone se pehle pair stretch karein, paani peeyein, aur doctor se supplements ke baare mein poochein. Agar cramping pet mein ho aur regular ho toh turant doctor ko dikhayein.

Week 32 Checklist

  • Schedule your growth scan (32-34 weeks) if not already done

  • Start researching pediatricians for after birth
  • Continue iron and calcium supplements
  • Practice breathing exercises for labor preparation
  • Begin thinking about your birth plan — cord clamping preference, skin-to-skin, breastfeeding within 1 hour
