Your Baby This Week

About the size of a pumpkin

Length: ~44cm, 2 kg

Quick Answer

At 33 weeks, your baby is about the size of a pumpkin (~44cm, 2 kg). Baby’s bones are hardening now — except the skull bones, which stay soft and flexible to allow passage through the birth canal. You’re likely feeling the weight — literally. Pelvic pressure, back pain, and fatigue are your constant companions now. Seven weeks to go.

Baby Development at Week 33

Your baby is putting on weight rapidly — about 200g per week from here on:

  • Bones are hardening — calcium is being deposited into the skeletal system. The skull bones intentionally remain soft and unfused (the fontanelles) to allow the head to mold through the birth canal
  • Immune system is developing — antibodies are being transferred from you to baby through the placenta
  • Baby can detect light — pupils constrict and dilate in response to light. Baby’s eyes are open during wake periods
  • Lungs are still maturing — surfactant production continues. Each day inside helps
  • Brain is growing rapidly — new neural connections forming at an incredible rate
  • Baby is running out of room — movements may feel different. Less somersaults, more rolls and jabs

The head circumference continues to increase as the brain grows rapidly.

Your Body at Week 33

Your uterus is about 13 cm above your belly button. You’re carrying about 4-5 litres of extra blood.

Common Symptoms

SymptomWhat’s HappeningWhat Helps
Pelvic pressureBaby’s weight pushing down on your pelvic floorKegel exercises. Pregnancy support belt. Rest frequently
Waddling walkRelaxin has loosened pelvic joints. Center of gravity shiftedWide, comfortable shoes. Watch your step on stairs
OverheatingIncreased blood volume and metabolismLoose cotton clothes. Stay in cool environments. Hydrate
Carpal tunnel symptomsFluid retention causing nerve compression in wristsWrist splints at night. Shake hands out. Usually resolves after delivery
ClumsinessShifted center of gravity + loose jointsBe extra careful on wet floors and stairs
Round ligament painSharp pain in lower abdomen when you move suddenlyMove slowly. Support belly when changing position
Vivid dreamsHormones + anxiety about delivery. Very common in third trimesterNormal. Talk about your worries with your partner or doctor

Pelvic Floor Exercises (Kegels)

These are important now and will help with delivery and recovery:

  1. Tighten the muscles you’d use to stop urinating midstream
  2. Hold for 5-10 seconds
  3. Release slowly
  4. Repeat 10-15 times, 3 times a day

This reduces risk of urinary incontinence after delivery and can help during pushing.

Tests & Screenings Due

Growth Scan (If Not Done Yet)

The 32-34 week growth scan window is still open. Don’t miss this one — it checks:

  • Baby’s estimated weight and growth trajectory
  • Amniotic fluid levels
  • Placenta position and health
  • Baby’s presentation (head-down or breech)

Routine Fortnightly Visit

  • Blood pressure — preeclampsia risk increases as you get closer to term
  • Urine protein and sugar
  • Fundal height
  • Fetal heart rate

Coming Soon

  • GBS screening at 35-37 weeks — a vaginal and rectal swab to check for Group B Streptococcus

Nutrition This Week

Baby’s bones are hardening, so calcium is critical right now.

What to Prioritize

  • Calcium — 1000 mg/day. Milk, curd, paneer, ragi, til (sesame), nachni. Take calcium and iron supplements at different times (2 hours apart) — they interfere with each other’s absorption
  • Iron — anemia screening should have been done recently. If hemoglobin is below 11, you may need higher doses or IV iron
  • Dates (khajur) — some studies suggest eating 6 dates/day from 36 weeks may help with cervical ripening. You can start gradually now
  • Protein — 78g/day. Especially important as baby is gaining 200g/week
  • Fiber and water — constipation management. Whole grains, fruits, isabgol

Government Nutrition Support

Under ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services), pregnant women are entitled to supplementary nutrition through Anganwadi centers. If you haven’t registered, do it now.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Regular contractions — more than 4 per hour before 37 weeks
  • Sudden swelling of face, hands, or feet — especially with headache
  • Severe headache + visual changes — blurred vision, seeing spots, floaters
  • Vaginal bleeding — any amount
  • Fluid leaking from vagina — clear, watery, continuous
  • Baby not moving normally — reduced or changed pattern
  • Severe itching on palms and soles without rash — obstetric cholestasis
  • Fever, chills, or painful urination

What’s Coming Up

  • Week 34: Vernix coating thickens. Lungs are maturing significantly. Good survival if born now
  • Week 35: Brain weighs two-thirds of final weight. Start packing your hospital bag
  • Week 36: Visits become weekly. GBS screening. Lanugo starts shedding

Aapke Sawaal (Common Questions)

Kya 33 weeks mein delivery ho sakti hai?

Haan, 33 weeks mein paida hone wale babies ki survival rate bahut acchi hai (95%+), lekin NICU mein kuch hafte lag sakte hain — mainly lungs ke liye. Har din andar rehna baby ke liye faaydemand hai. Agar preterm labor ke signs hain (regular contractions, pelvic pressure, fluid leak) toh turant hospital jaayein.

Mera baby bahut neeche lag raha hai — kya ye normal hai?

33 weeks mein kuch babies neeche settle hone lagte hain, khaas kar pehli pregnancy mein. Isko “lightening” ya “engagement” kehte hain. Isse aapko breathe karna aasan ho sakta hai lekin bathroom zyaada jaana padta hai. Ye normal hai aur delivery weeks baad bhi ho sakti hai.

Government schemes ke liye kab apply karein?

Abhi kar lein agar nahi kiya hai. PMMVY (Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana) mein Rs 5,000 milte hain — pehli kisht pregnancy registration ke baad, doosri 6 months baad. JSY (Janani Suraksha Yojana) mein institutional delivery ke liye Rs 1,400 (rural). JSSK (Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram) mein delivery aur C-section free hai government hospitals mein.

Week 33 Checklist

  • Complete your growth scan if not done yet (32-34 week window)

  • Attend your fortnightly prenatal visit
  • Start making a list of items for your hospital bag

  • Continue iron, calcium, and vitamin D supplements
